Algal Ecology – 2019
Algal samples were collected from Lake George, NY as part of a UWSP alumnus’ graduate thesis on the seasonal composition of diatoms in the lake. A qualitative analysis of green and blue-green algal genera was completed by current students at UWSP. Samples were collected over several months in the summer and fall of 2018. Prepared slides were viewed under light microscopy to identify all algal organisms to genus and note relative abundance of each. Studies of seasonal changes in algal abundance can help us better understand the basis of lake food chains, as well as how different genera of algae respond to seasonal changes in temperature, dissolved oxygen, and other lake conditions.
